The Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has visited Kano State to personally extend his condolences to the families of the victims brutally killed in Uromi, Edo State.

Meeting with Kano State Governor and key community leaders, Okpebholo assured them that his administration was fully committed to ensuring justice for the slain travellers.

During his visit, Okpebholo reaffirmed his resolve to bring the perpetrators to book, disclosing that 14 suspects had already been arrested and would be transferred to Abuja for further interrogation.

“We have made significant progress in our investigations. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is not happy about this incident and has directed security agencies to go after the culprits. I can assure you that justice will be served,” Okpebholo stated.

The Kano State Governor commended Okpebholo for his swift intervention and his commitment to supporting the victims’ families.

He confirmed that the Edo governor had taken immediate action in retrieving the corpses and arranging proper burials.

“We trust his assurance that the culprits will be brought to book, as justice remains our utmost priority. The people of Kano are peaceful and hospitable, and this tragedy serves as a lesson to all. I urge all leaders across Nigeria to ensure the safety and protection of all citizens, regardless of their location,” the Kano State Governor remarked.

Governor Okpebholo also paid a condolence visit to the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, at his residence in Abuja.

The visit was in response to the brutal killings of travellers from Kano State who were intercepted and murdered by a mob in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State.

The victims, mostly hunters from Kano State, were on their way home for Sallah celebrations when they were attacked and killed.

Speaking during the visit, Okpebholo reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring that justice prevails.

“It’s unfortunate that it happened in our state. We are here to let you and other people know that we are not happy. The president is doing something drastic about this. He’s not happy either.

“The Inspector General of Police has swung into action. The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Criminal Investigation Department (DIG CID), is in charge. So far, they have arrested 14 suspects, and they will be brought to Abuja for interrogation. We have also set up a committee to see that we take care of the families of the deceased,” he stated.

Responding, Senator Barau Jibrin emphasized the need for swift justice, stating that those responsible must be brought to book to serve as a deterrent to others.

“We cannot undo what has been done, but all Nigerians are looking forward to seeing these people arrested and brought to justice.

“You are doing well in that direction, and I’m also glad you’ve spoken about the fact that your government is ready to assist the families of those affected. I want you to continue to pursue the case so that all those who were involved in these barbaric actions are brought to justice,” he said.

The tragedy has sparked widespread condemnation, but community leaders from both states have urged for calm and unity.

Speaking on behalf of the Arewa community in Edo State, Badamasi Sally reaffirmed the longstanding cordial relationship between the northern community and Edo people, emphasizing that the unfortunate event should not be used to tarnish the State’s image.

“I was born and raised in Edo State, and we have always maintained a peaceful relationship with the people here. This incident should not be used to create division or smear the reputation of the Edo State Government. The swift response of the state government was commendable.

“Moreover, it was the people of Uromi who rescued some of the victims from the assailants. This tragedy will not change our bond with the people of Edo,” he said.

Fred Akhigbe, leader of the Edo community in Kano, also expressed appreciation for Governor Okpebholo’s visit, urging both communities to maintain peace and unity.

“We are grateful to the governor of Edo State for personally coming to Kano to express his condolences. When this tragic incident happened, there was apprehension, but we are reassured by the swift actions taken by both state governments.

“We sympathize with the people of Kano State and pray for the victims. I have lived in Kano for 52 years, and we must remember that we are all one. There is no need for conflict between us. We commend both governors for their leadership and commitment to justice,” he said
