Benin City, May – The Edo State Police Command has arrested 95 suspected cultists in a major crackdown on cult-related violence across Benin City and its environs. The operation, which lasted a week, also led to the recovery of two locally made pistols, one single-barrel shotgun, and 24 live cartridges.

According to a press release signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Joel Yamu, the suspects are believed to be members of the Maphites, Eiye, and Aye confraternities — groups notorious for violent clashes and supremacy battles in the state.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, fdc, warned youths against joining unlawful societies that could jeopardize their future and endanger lives. He also urged parents and guardians to be more vigilant about the activities of their wards, stressing the importance of early intervention in preventing youth involvement in cultism.

So far, 64 of the arrested suspects have been charged to court and remanded in custody, while investigations continue on the remaining individuals.

The Edo Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to rid the state of criminal elements and maintain peace and order.
