The Edo State Government, through its Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, is stepping up efforts to safeguard the health and well-being of its pilgrims currently participating in the 2025 Hajj in Makkah.
This renewed focus comes in response to critical advisories issued by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) concerning the extreme temperatures currently being experienced in the Holy Land.
Speaking from Makkah, the Chairman of the Edo State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, Mallam Musah Muhammad Uduimoh, and the Executive Secretary, Alhaji Eranga Abdulkabir Muhammadkabir, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring a smooth and safe pilgrimage for all Edo pilgrims.
In a voice note sent via WhatsApp from Makkah, Chairman Uduimoh stated, “We are constantly in touch with our pilgrims and are closely monitoring the situation in Makkah. Part of ensuring their well-being involves providing continuous guidance and support as they prepare for and perform the Hajj rites.”
He revealed that the Board recently organised a mandatory Hajj lecture in Makkah, a crucial session aimed at equipping pilgrims with the necessary understanding of the Hajj rites, with particular emphasis on practical concerns and their overall welfare.
Also speaking on the occasion, Alhaji Eranga offered important guidance to the pilgrims regarding the logistical challenges posed by limited facilities in Mina and Arafat.
In his address during the lecture, which was made available to the press, he explained that the large influx of pilgrims often results in long queues for essential facilities such as toilets.
He said, “We are strongly encouraging our pilgrims to practise moderation in their eating habits, in line with Prophetic guidance—allocating one-third of the stomach to food, one-third to water, and one-third to air.”
He further urged pilgrims to be mindful in their consumption of items such as juice, fruits, and sweets, and to plan their toilet visits in advance to avoid unnecessary discomfort.
“Consideration for fellow pilgrims is paramount,” he added. “We encourage everyone to be efficient and respectful of others waiting in line.”
Addressing the serious issue of the ongoing heatwave, the Executive Secretary reiterated the directives being issued by NAHCON in Makkah.
He stated, “The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria has issued an urgent advisory regarding the extremely high temperatures currently affecting this year’s pilgrimage, with forecasts ranging between 40°C and 47°C.
“Following a stakeholders’ meeting held in Makkah, we have been instructed to inform all pilgrims that they must remain inside their tents in Mina and Arafat between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.”
He stressed that the warning should be taken seriously, noting that this year’s heat levels are abnormally severe. Pilgrims were strongly advised to remain hydrated, drink water continuously, and carry water and umbrellas if they must step outside during peak heat hours.
“We urge all our pilgrims to strictly adhere to these instructions,” Alhaji Eranga concluded.
