… Celebrates Dr. Pius Odubu, praises lifelong dedication to Edo
Story: BENIN CITY – Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, on Tuesday launched an ambitious rural healthcare initiative designed to overhaul medical services for the state’s underserved communities, pledging to break longstanding barriers to healthcare access.
The initiative, part of the state’s SHINE development blueprint which prioritises Security, Health, Infrastructure, Natural Resources, and Education focuses on extending subsidised health insurance to rural residents who previously lacked access to basic medical care.
Speaking at the launch, Edo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, said the administration’s approach combines insurance coverage, infrastructure upgrades, and intensive public health education to deliver sustainable and inclusive healthcare.
He noted that the new grassroots insurance model will help fund the revitalisation of primary health centres, ensuring they remain operational, well-staffed, and accountable.
Teams of health educators have already been deployed across Edo’s three senatorial districts, conducting in-language awareness campaigns on hygiene, vaccinations, and disease prevention.
The administration’s efforts are timely, coming as the state battles a diphtheria outbreak. According to the Health Commissioner, 15 suspected cases have been recorded statewide, with six confirmed and three fatalities.
The Ministry of Health, working with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), has intensified surveillance and vaccination efforts to curb spread.
Governor Okpebholo’s administration is also collaborating closely with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and other media platforms to amplify critical health information.
“The media is not just a mouthpiece; they are key partners in ensuring our health messages reach every community,” Dr. Oshiomhole stated.
Despite challenges including vaccine misinformation and logistical hurdles in rural areas, officials say the government remains committed to early intervention and building community trust.
The administration emphasised that this healthcare reform is designed as a long-term investment in the health and dignity of every Edo resident, beyond the lifespan of any political cycle.
Meanwhile, Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has sent a warm birthday wishes to Dr. Pius Odubu, a former Deputy Governor of the State, lauding his enduring service to the state and the nation.
In a congratulatory statement released on Tuesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Governor Okpebholo described Dr. Odubu as a statesman of repute whose leadership and commitment to the welfare of the people of Edo have left an indelible mark.
Highlighting Dr. Odubu’s contributions during his tenure as Deputy Governor and his continued role in mentoring young leaders, Governor Okpebholo praised his dedication to hard work, integrity, and selfless service.
He noted that Dr. Odubu’s career reflects the best of Edo’s values and serves as an inspiration to aspiring public servants.
