BENIN CITY – Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo has summoned the contractors handling the Benin-Sapele Road project following what he described as an unacceptable delay in the pace of work despite full financial mobilisation.

He expressed dissatisfaction with the speed of work, warning that contractors must provide explanations or face sanctions.

The governor, who personally drove through the 20-kilometre stretch, stopped at several points to inspect the quality of drains, pavements and construction materials.

Okpebholo, who was cheered by motorists caught in the gridlock along the busy highway, assured that his administration would intensify collaboration with the Federal Government to ensure timely delivery of the project.

“Our people are suffering due to the slow pace of work, and we have to do something drastic to make this road motorable. The job being done is solid, but the speed is not good for me. Edo people deserve better,” the governor said.

Stopping at Peanut Junction, Ogheghe Junction, Akenuwa Community, and the abandoned Old Road section, Okpebholo promised to review the drainage design, which currently ends midtown, leaving residents at risk of flooding.

“Drainage is important. If it is not properly channelled, the road will not last. We will adjust the design to ensure water is taken out of town and properly desilt. That way, the road will be durable,” he added.

The governor disclosed that work on an additional seven-kilometre segment would soon commence, stressing that his administration remains committed to easing the suffering of commuters and reviving economic activities along the corridor.
