LAGOS – Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have interrogated three hospital workers following the escape of a patient from a medical facility located on Tunde Street, in the Maroko Local Government Area of the state.
The incident reportedly occurred around 8:00 p.m. last Monday at Reliant Medical Centre.
The personnel questioned include two nurses and a ward orderly who were on duty at the time the patient fled.
The escapee, identified as Godfrey Godday, had been brought to the hospital by a police patrol team after he was rescued from the scene of a mob attack that claimed the life of another man, allegedly caught engaging in a same-sex act with the fleeing patient.
According to Dr. Aziegbemi Richard, Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Reliant Medical Centre, the patient was admitted around 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 20, suffering from second-degree injuries to his head and shoulder.
“The police team, led by one Inspector Hassan, informed us that the patient had been rescued from a mob that attacked and killed his friend, Emmanuel, after the two were accused of same-sex activity. The police have been checking on him regularly since his admission,” Dr. Aziegbemi said.
Spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, DSP Joseph Chidi Egbonyi, confirmed that the hospital workers were invited for questioning following a formal report lodged by the CMD.
“Our team visited the patient just yesterday. He was responding to treatment and was scheduled to be discharged in a few days to assist investigators by explaining what happened and possibly identifying the attackers.
“The nurses have given their statements and are cooperating with the investigation. We are hopeful the suspect will be rearrested soon,” DSP Chidi stated.
