LAGOS: The Lagos State Government has justified the demolition of distressed structures across the state, describing it as necessary to safeguard lives, property and the environment.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said on Monday that the demolitions followed comprehensive safety assessments by relevant agencies, stressing that public safety remained a top priority.
He said the government would not hesitate to order evacuation or demolition of buildings that posed risks, particularly in densely populated areas.
Sanwo-Olu urged residents to cooperate with government officials and comply with safety directives, noting that such actions were taken in the collective interest of the public.
He added that the exercise was part of a broader environmental management strategy aimed at addressing structural failures, urban congestion and environmental risks, while assuring residents of continued enforcement of building regulations and environmental monitoring.
