UBIAJA (ESAN SOUTH EAST) — The Edo State Government has rescued a newborn baby boy delivered by a mentally challenged woman in Ubiaja, Esan South East Local Government Area, and pledged to rehabilitate the mother as part of efforts to protect vulnerable citizens across the state.

The swift intervention was led by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Eugenia Abdallah, who visited the council secretariat following reports of the incident.

Mrs Abdallah reaffirmed that safeguarding the rights and welfare of women, children, the elderly and other vulnerable groups remains a top priority of the present administration.

She stressed that the government would continue to act decisively, particularly in situations involving children in urgent need of protection.

According to her, the newborn has been placed in a secure and nurturing environment where he will receive proper medical care, adequate nutrition and developmental support to ensure a healthy start to life.

She further disclosed that the mother, said to be roaming the community, would be located and taken to a rehabilitation facility for comprehensive care, counselling and treatment aimed at stabilising her condition and preparing her for eventual reintegration into society.

The Commissioner commended the leadership of the local government and the management of Central Hospital, Ubiaja, for their prompt response in providing immediate medical attention to the baby and preventing a potential health crisis.

In his remarks, the Head of Local Government Administration, Mr Ernest Oyakhilome Erebholo, lauded the Commissioner’s swift and decisive intervention, describing it as a demonstration of proactive leadership and genuine commitment to the protection of vulnerable citizens.

He pledged continued collaboration between the council and the ministry.

The visit ended with the formal handover of the baby to the Commissioner, who ensured his safe relocation from the hospital to a children’s home for proper care and protection
