CALABAR: The Cross River Police State Command has confirmed the arrest of a state lawmaker, Mr Ovat Agbor, over allegations of domestic violence.
ASP Sunday Eitokpah, the state police spokesperson, said Agbor was taken into custody on Monday morning and is currently being interrogated at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Calabar.
The incident had sparked widespread reactions on social media. In response, the Cross River House of Assembly had suspended Agbor on Thursday, condemning the alleged violent conduct as unbecoming of a lawmaker.
The assembly resolved to place Agbor on indefinite suspension and constituted a committee to investigate the matter and report back for further legislative action.
Agbor, who represents Obubra I State constituency, issued a public apology to the State Governor, Assembly, his constituents, and the wider Cross River community.
