As Professor John Imonbhio Abhuere marks his 75th birthday on April 21, 2026, reflections on his life reveal a distinguished career defined by service, scholarship and commitment to youth development and national growth.
Born on April 21, 1951, at Unuwazi, Uromi in Edo State, Prof. Abhuere had his early education at St. John’s Anglican Primary School, Unuwazi, before attending Edo Boys High School (now Adolor College), Benin City.
He pursued higher education at notable institutions including the University of Lagos, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, University of Ibadan, University College Swansea in the United Kingdom, University of Wales and the University of Benin, where he obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Public Administration with emphasis on Development Administration.
His academic qualifications include a Bachelor of Arts degree in History, a Master of Science degree in Economics with specialization in Sectorial Planning and Management, as well as postgraduate certifications in Modern Management, Social Policy and Administration, and Speech Writing. In 2019, he attained the rank of Professor of Management and Development Studies.
Prof. Abhuere served meritoriously in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for over three decades, contributing significantly to youth mobilization, empowerment and national integration. He rose to the position of Director, Corps Welfare and Inspection at the NYSC Directorate Headquarters, Abuja. He also served as Director, Planning, Research and Statistics, and as State Director in Edo and Kebbi States.
During his service, this humble giant held several key administrative responsibilities and chaired important committees, including the NYSC Honours Awards Committee, the Tenders Board, and the Decree Review Committee, among others.
In addition to his administrative career, Prof. Abhuere has contributed to academic development, having taught Industrial Relations at Nasarawa State University, public Administration department, (2011)Lafia. He currently lectures postgraduate students in Leadership, Management and Development Studies at the CIBS Learning Centre, University of America, Abuja.
A prolific writer and commentator, Prof. Abhuere has published extensively on socio-economic and governance issues in both local and international journals. He is the author of notable books, including Youth Policy and Administration in Nigeria since 1970, Power of Youth and Other Essays on the Political Economy of Nigeria, and Restructuring Debate in Nigeria: Invitation to Nation Building.
He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Management (FNIM), Fellow of the Institute of Management Consultants (FIMC), and a member of several professional bodies. He is also a certified trainer with the Centre for Management Development (CMD), Nigeria.
Prof. Abhuere’s contributions to public service and youth development have earned him several honours, including the Best Federal Director of the Fourth Republic Award (2006), Global Lifetime Achievement Award (2010), and the Pan-African Servant Leadership Award (2018).
He is the Founder and Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Centre for Childcare and Youth Development (CCYD), Uromi, through which he continues to promote youth empowerment and community development initiatives.
It is very important to add that this ebullient professor, even at 75, still has much to offer society in advancing the collective good of humanity.
He holds traditional titles including Ehinomen of Kebbi and Oven-non-r’efuare of Ebelle Kingdom.
Prof. Abhuere, whose interests include writing, music, dancing and lawn tennis, is married with children.
