The Edo State Police Command said it has launched a manhunt for gunmen who abducted a woman along Airport Road in Benin City on Sunday.

The command’s spokesperson ASP Eno Ikoedem stated this while confirming the woman’s abduction in Benin.

“Police received the report this afternoon and investigations have commenced. Our Anti-Kidnapping Unit and Anti-Violent Crime Unit have been mobilised and are working on the case,” Ikoedem said.

It was gathered that the victim, whose identity had yet to be ascertained as of press time, was reportedly returning from church with family members when she was accosted near a grocery shop at the popular Vegetable Market on Airport Road.

Eyewitnesses said the armed men forcefully dragged the woman into a waiting vehicle and sped off.

The abductors were alleged to have fired gunshots while fleeing the scene, causing panic among traders, residents as armed security personnel stationed at two commercial banks in the vicinity scampered to safety.

Sources said the operation lasted only a few minutes before the hoodlums escaped with their victim.
