BENIN CITY – The Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, has constituted the Edo State Local Government Election Petition Tribunal.
The Chief Registrar of the Edo State High Court, Mr. B. O. Osawaru, Esq., who made this known in a statement, said the constitution of the tribunal is in line with Section 78(2) of the Edo State Local Government Electoral Law, 2012 (as amended).
According to him, the tribunal would be chaired by Justice B. E. Oniha, while Justice O. A. Otamere and Justice G. J. Okundamiya would serve as members.
He said the tribunal is expected to entertain and determine petitions arising from the conduct of the local government elections in Edo State, in line with the provisions of the law.
The Chief Registrar noted that the constitution of the tribunal marked the commencement of the judicial process for the resolution of electoral disputes arising from the local government polls; providing aggrieved candidates and political parties with the legal avenue to challenge the outcome of the elections.
He reaffirmed the state judiciary’s commitment to the rule of law, the fair, impartial and expeditious determination of all petitions brought before the tribunal.
