The Executive Chairman, Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele has congratulated the players and officials of Edo Queens on their historic 4-1 triumph over Ampem of Ghana to lift the 2026 WAFU-B title and subsequently qualified for the CAF champions league proper.
The Edo state Sports Commission boss described the victory as an historic achievement for Edo State and Nigeria as the state owned club just won the African regional title for the second time in the history of the tournament.
Enabulele said that he is dedicating the triumph to Governor Monday Okpebholo who gave him the opportunity to serve the state as number sports administrator in the state.
He commended the Governor for his unwavering support for sports development and his commitment to repositioning Edo State as a leading sports destination in Nigeria.
He also commended the players for their fighting spirit, noting that their ability to come from behind twice in the final match against Ampem demonstrated their through character, discipline and resilience that an average Edo person is known for.
He congratulated the technical crew led by the stand-in coach, Kennedy Boboye, for their tactical discipline, determination and ability to keep the team bonded and focused throughout the competition.
Enabulele expressed the confidence that Edo Queens would continue to make Edo State and Nigeria proud when they take their place among Africa’s elite women’s clubs at the CAF Women’s Champions League in South Africa later in the year.
With the WAFU-B crown secured, Edo Queens now turn their attention to the bigger stage — the CAF Women’s Champions League scheduled for South Africa, where they will seek to build on their achievement.
The Nigerian champions came from behind twice
in Ouagadougou on Saturday night, to hand unbeaten Ghanaian champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies their first defeat, edging them 4-1 on penalties after a thrilling 2-2 draw to lift the 2026 WAFU-B Women’s title and book their place in the CAF Women’s Champions League.
Edo Queens lifted the WAFU-B cup for the first time in 2024 and progressed to a 4th place finish at the CAF champions league proper in Morocco.
The Nigeria’s representatives redeemed their image with the 4-1 victory over their Ghanaian counterparts Ampem Darkoa Ladies who handed them the only defeat they suffered in the WAFU-B tournament. The group B last game ended 2-1 in favour of Ampem , topping the group ahead of Edo Queens.
On the road to the finals,Edo Queens at the semi-finals stage,recorded an overwhelming 5-1 victory over the host Country’s USFA just as Ampem Darkoa Ladies spanked Benin Republic’s FC Dynamique 4-1 to advance to the final in the championship.
The Benin girls trashed AS Garde Nationale of Niger 7-0 in their first group match and later triumphed over ASEC Mimosas of Ivory Coast 3-1 before their 2-1 loss to Ampem Darkoa Ladies in the third match.
