English Championship club Charlton Athletic have confirmed that goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has been invited to the Nigeria national team squad for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The club announced that the 24-year-old has been called up by the Super Eagles for their opening qualifying fixtures against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau later this month.
“Arthur Okonkwo has been called up to the Nigeria squad for their upcoming AFCON qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau,” Charlton Athletic stated.
The invitation gives Okonkwo another chance to push for a regular place in the Super Eagles as Nigeria begin their campaign to reach the 2027 AFCON, which will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
Okonkwo joined Charlton on a season-long loan from fellow Championship side Wrexham in August and has featured at that level this season.
He previously came through Arsenal’s academy and enjoyed a successful spell at Wrexham that included back-to-back promotions.
The goalkeeper switched his international allegiance from England to Nigeria earlier this year after representing the Three Lions at youth level.
He made his Super Eagles debut during the 2026 Unity Cup in London, keeping clean sheets in victories over Zimbabwe and Jamaica as Nigeria retained the title.
Nigeria are scheduled to host Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on 23 September before facing Guinea-Bissau four days later.
The Super Eagles are drawn in Group L alongside Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau and co-hosts Tanzania.
