The Enugu State Government has reaffirmed its readiness to host the 23rd edition of the 2026 National Sports Festival, scheduled to commence on November 27, amid growing concerns among stakeholders over preparations for the national sporting event.
The assurance was given by the state Commissioner for Works, Hon. Benjamin Okoh, state this while on an inspection tour at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, one of the facilities expected to play a key role in the festival.
Okoh expressed confidence in the state’s preparations, maintaining that the government remained committed to ensuring that the facilities required for a successful hosting of the competition were ready for the event.
However, despite the government’s reassurance, uncertainty continues to surround the festival, with stakeholders and participating states expressing concerns over the pace of preparations as the scheduled commencement date draws closer.
One of the major issues raising questions about the readiness of the host state is the reported delay in the commencement of registration for athletes and officials expected to participate in the competition.
The situation has fuelled fears of a possible postponement, as sports administrators, athletes and other stakeholders await further clarity on the arrangements for the festival.
The concerns have also drawn comparisons with the postponement of the Intermediate Games in Lagos, which was reportedly linked to inadequate sporting facilities. The development has heightened calls for early intervention to prevent a similar situation from affecting the National Sports Festival.
With less than seven weeks to the scheduled opening, attention is increasingly shifting to the National Sports Commission (NSC), which is expected to play a crucial role in assessing the state of preparedness and determining the next course of action.
As anticipation builds across the sporting community, stakeholders will be watching closely for an official position from the NSC on whether the festival will proceed as scheduled or whether adjustments to the timetable may become necessary.
For now, Enugu State’s assurance has offered some hope, but the timely completion of facilities, commencement of registration and clear communication from the relevant authorities remain critical to restoring confidence and ensuring a successful 23rd National Sports Festival.
