TO provide a platform for a better understanding of execution of waste evacuation services by waste contractors in Edo State, the State Waste Management Board, in collaboration with Edo State Employment and Expenditure for Result (SEEFOR) has organized a capacity building and workshop for state holders for the purpose of enhancing maximum performance.
The State Commissioner for Environment and Public Utilities, Hon. Clem Agba who was represented at the occasion by Mr. Ehon G.I said the capacity building and workshop was timely, especially at a time waste management was becoming problematic in most urban areas.
Agba urged the board to evaluate themselves from time to time to enhance the betterment of the organizations.
Also speaking the General Manager of Edo State Waste Management Board, Miss. Gilian Ochugbue, went down memory lane on the commencement of Integrated Waste Management Scheme midwived by the board for the purpose of evaluation of the management scheme.
Miss Ochugbue noted that the scheme is a public/private partnership arrangement, saying the waste managers are engaged to evacuate waste from homes, offices and industries with the refuse evacuated from the various locations deposited at the refuse dumpsites.
She said the state currently has three government approved dumpsites located at Otofure (Oluku by-pass), Iguomo and Ikhueniro along Benin – Auchi by-pass.
Miss. Ochugbue who stressed that the meeting of the stakeholders became imperative so as to look at the areas where they have challenges and tackling it for a better performance maintained that contractors must develop schedule for daily evacuation, provide time shift, attendance register and other tools needed for their jobs.
The Waste Management boss who frowned at the drop in revenue remittance and therefore charged the contractors to double their efforts for optimum performance.
Addressing the participants, the Communication Officer, SEEFOR who represented the programme director Mr. Taiwo Akinrele harped on the need for waste managers to work closely with Edo State Management Board, saying that payment will hence forth depend on the workers performance.
Appreciating the state governor’s support towards the success of the SEEFOR intervention, Mr. Akerele urged the contractors to reciprocate the governor’s gesture by doubling their efforts.
On her part, the Head of Admin and Human Resources, Waste Management Board, Mrs. Efosa Imade while reeing out the code of conduct of Waste Management Board harped on the need for contractors to ensure full coverage of their assigned zones in order to eliminate and discourage dumping of waste in unauthorized places. She stressed that it shell be their (the contractors) responsibility to remove illegal dumps, direct and supervise daily evacuation to ensure efficient services and maintain a proper use of log book for all evacuation services.
Also speaking, Hon. Nosakhare Igbinedion who represented Hon. Mrs. Elizabeth Ighodaro commended the General Manager for her lofty ideas, and hoped their performance will be further enhanced.
