Benin City Governor Adams Oshiomhole says the New Era College, Benin City will be made a model school when completed before August this year, stressing that the secondary school w be one of the best in the country.
Governor Oshiomhole was speaking Wednesday in Benin City during the inspection of the on-going construction of buildings of the New Era College consisting of a mega hall, several classrooms, physics, chemistry, biology and fine arts laboratories, hostels, staff rooms, offices, among others.
Addressing the press during the inspection, Oshiomhole said, “We have to come observe what is going on here. We have had to terminate the former contract and re-award to a new contractor. You can see the difference between the old blocks and the new blocks that they are putting in. And the job should have been finished by now, but we had a little delay from the former contractor, and so now with the new one, you can look at the sheer number of workers that are working.
We believe over the next few months, we have asked them to rush, so that we can finish it, both the halls, the senior secondary school, and down there we are going to start the foundation for the junior secondary school.”
According to him, “The whole idea is to return New Era to what it should be, to make it one of the model schools, return it to a boarding system and ensuring that the pupils have a secondary school that compares to none other anywhere in the country. I guess in the next few months, it should be completed. The main purpose today is to ascertain that the contractors are working. You can see the number of people working. The whole idea is to rush and get this thing completed. We have suffered a little delay but as they say better late than never.
“So, I am impressed with what I have seen. We have made corrections on the old structures that were defective.”
Speaking to the workers at the construction site, Governor Oshiomhole said, “I am happy with the quality of work I have seen. It is very good. I am also impressed with the way I see all of you working in your various sections. And the whole is that we want the school to be completed as quickly as possible.
“You know that you are not just here as workers, you are also here as the owners of the school. You know the school is meant for your children and our children. So, it is also therefore our own. So, I want you to do everything you can to support your management, sustain the quality so that over the next few months this job will be over. By August the job will be finished. So, do your best, and we will do our best to look for money to pay you; as you are working, we are paying. We want this contract to be completed as soon as possible.”
