BENIN CITY – Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki said his administration will formulate and send a new disability bill to the state house of assembly for consideration, after the Constitution of the state executive council.

Governor Obaseki made this known midweek in Benin City during the inauguration of a social security Programme tagged: ‘Project Help’, put together by Network for the Advancement of person with visual Disabilities (NAPVID) in collaboration with the state government.

According to Obaseki, the disability bill sent to the house of assembly in 2012 by the previous administration, “was riddled with inconsistencies”.

“It is on record that the initial bill that was before the Edo State House of assembly was riddled with inconsistencies that would further ampere the interests of persons with disabilities”, Obaseki, who was represented at the event by the permanent secretary, ministry of social development and gender issues, Mrs Dorcas Idehen said.

The government maintained that the proposed bill will not only address the concerns of the PWDs, but also “Strengthen frame work of institutions that would see to proper response” for the group.

Meanwhile, only 10 states in Nigeria has so far domesticated the Discrimination Against persons with Disabilities prohibition Act of 2018, signed into law by president Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.

The states are Anambra, Bauchi, Ekiti, Lagos, Kogi, Ondo, Plateau, Jigawa, Kwara and Kano.
