Edo state para-powerlifting contingent yesterday arrived Abuja ahead of the commencement of the maiden edition of National Para Games tagged “Abuja 2022”

The state contingent which is made up of fourteen (14) para-powerlifters, coaches departed the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium,. Benin City yesterday with with the readiness to doing Edo proud in the national championship.

The observer sprots scooped that the 14 para-powerlifters would be competing in all the categories available in the powerlifting event as the opening ceremony is billed for today at the newly renovated MKO Abiola international Stadium, Abuja.

In a telephone chat, the State Para-Powerlifting Coach and leader of the Edo State contingent, Mrs. Patience Igbiti, expressed optimism that her para-powerlifters are going for the number one spot in para-powerlifting event at the championship.

She disclosed that the athletes who have been engaging in intense training for the past two weeks are charged and ready to bring more laurels to the Edo state government.

The first female para-powerlifting Coach in Nigeria and Africa commended the Edo state government for the support towards the athletes and further appeal for more supports from the government and other stakeholders in the state.

The coach also thanked the contribution of the former Edo state Chairman of the Para-Powerlifting Association, Mrs. Osawaru Ogbeide-Ihama, whom she averred has been very instrumental to the success and welfare of the para-powerlifters outside the Edo State government.

The first ever para-sports championships which will be starting is expected to climax on April 16th, 2022 with a closing ceremony.

Recall that the Edo state para- powerlifting contingent narrowly lost the number stop to its Delta state neighbour, with one medal difference after clinching eight (8) medals as against team Delta nine (9) medals at the just concluded South-South Para-Powerlifting Championship in Benin city.
