… Surviving son goes into hiding
Uromi, Edo State – Tragedy struck in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area of Edo State, as four unidentified gunmen allegedly murdered a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Okosun, and his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Okosun. Their only surviving son, Benjamin Okosun, reportedly escaped the scene and has since gone into hiding.
According to community sources, the attack occurred after the assailants gained access to the Okosun residence, allegedly forcing a visitor at gunpoint to lead them into the couple’s apartment. Moments later, gunshots were heard, and both Mr. and Mrs. Okosun were found dead. Their bodies were later deposited at the local mortuary.
Sources say Mr. Okosun had been under pressure to defect to the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), which sought to capitalize on his significant political influence. As a prominent APC figure in Uromi, Mr. Okosun was regarded as a key player capable of delivering electoral victory across seven constituencies.
Tensions reportedly escalated in April 2013, when Mr. Okosun declined an offer to join the PDP ahead of local government elections. Following the PDP’s loss in those elections, he allegedly began receiving threats from unidentified individuals in the area.
The attack on April 24 and 25, 2013, appears to have been premeditated. Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants waited until a visitor arrived at the compound before executing their plan. The couple was reportedly confronted and killed in their apartment, while Benjamin Okosun narrowly escaped after witnessing the harrowing incident.
Community members expressed fear for Benjamin’s safety, as his whereabouts remain unknown. Many believe he may be in hiding due to ongoing threats and the impunity with which the assailants still move freely in the area.
Authorities have yet to confirm any arrests or identify suspects in connection with the killings. Meanwhile, the community remains in shock, mourning the loss of two of its prominent figures.
