BENIN CITY – Edo State government has reiterated its commitment to continually unveil proactive programmes that would have positive impact on the women and girl child in the state.
The Edo State Commissioner for Women Affairs/Social Development, Hon. (Mrs) Blessing Maigida stated this while declaring open this year’s international women’s day in Benin City.
The Commissioner pointed out that since assumption of office the Comrade Governor Adams Oshiomhole has been able to touch the lives of the women in the state through the repositioned Edo State Skill Acquisition Centre, Evbomodu where graduands are empowered to set up businesses and become employers of labour.
The commissioner who was represented by the Ministry’s Director of Women/Social Development, Mr. J.O. Aiyevbakpen listed other areas to include annual distribution of empowerment materials to widows, workshops on widows empowerment/political participation, economic empowerment of need/distressed women/political appointments for women as well as capacity building amongst others.
She however enjoined women to avail themselves the opportunity and key into the government programmes for women.
The President of the Forum of Nigerian Women In Politics (FONWIP) Hon. Florence Igbinigie said the international women’s day was held annually to mark the achievements of women, politically, economically and socially.
She said Nigeria with over 140 million population was being faced with gender gap stressing that Nigeria women needed a legislation that would help move the nation forward.
