Some respondents in Lagos State have condemned in strong terms the police for the use of excessive brute against innocent Nigerians who marched the length and breath of the country in protest to demand an end to police brutality which rocked the entire country following the #ENDSARS protests.
On October 20th,2020 Nigerians mainly youths carried out a nationwide protest to register their displeasure against police brutality which often times is under-reported by the media.
Meanwhile,a survey conducted during the protest at the Lekki tollgate on October 20th in Lagos State examined the motives behind the #ENDSARS protests.
A respondent named John Igbineweka argued that the trend of police brutality had been on for several years without any response from government to urgently address the ugly situation which has led to the deaths of many innocent lives. He condemned the shooting of defenseless protesters at the Lekki tollgate insisting that the soldiers who carried out the shooting must be brought to justice.
Matthew Okungbowa on his part said in October 15th 2019,he was a victim of police brutality.
According to Okungbowa, his unpleasant experience in the hands of police happened when in October 2019 he had an argument with his landlord whose younger brother was a policeman .
He said his sins were that because of his sheer inability to pay his utilities bills to his landlord who often times pays the money to the service providers, his younger brother, the policeman was called upon to give him the beating of his life claiming that he was being rude and violent to his landlord (elder brother ) ,hence he is here to register his displeasure against police brutality at the Lekki tollgate.
Meanwhile,Nelson Erebholo condemned police brutality describing it as an act which was seriously rubbing off on the integrity of the police.
He said that owing to the increased rates of police brutality which led to unnecessary loss of life, unlawful detention without trial, many Nigerians seemed to have lost confidence in the police.
He said “the police who is supposed to ensure adequate protection of life and property in Nigeria has become an agent of oppression and repression in the hands of government.
“I was actively involved in the #ENDSARS protests at Lekki tollgate in Lagos State and as it is now am not sure of what might happen to many of us who protested against police brutality here as the government is secretly clamping down on the youths who were involved in the protest. “he said.
A recent investigation revealed that some of the respondents interviewed during and after the protest had been declared missing by their family members weeks after the interview.
