The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, has stated that Nigeria’s livestock sector has the potential to contribute N33 trillion to the economy if properly developed and harnessed.
Speaking during an inaugural meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on Livestock Development at the National Assembly on Wednesday, the minister emphasized the need to unbundle the sector to attract investments and create opportunities for ranching and dairy farming.
Maiha revealed that several Nigerian businessmen have already expressed interest in venturing into ranching and dairy activities.
He urged state governments to establish dedicated Ministries of Livestock for smoother collaboration with the federal government.
“At the moment, we are taking stock of state governments that already have Ministries of Livestock and Fisheries. For those that haven’t created one, they should do so to ensure seamless interaction with the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development,” Maiha said.
He further explained that unbundling the livestock sector would bring it into the formal economy, reduce risks, and encourage investment.
“This sector is worth about N33 trillion. There is now strong political support from the Office of the President and this Committee to drive its transformation,” the minister added.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the House Committee on Livestock Development, Hon. Wale Raji, acknowledged the urgent need to revamp the sector, highlighting its potential for job creation and economic growth.
Raji expressed confidence in the minister’s ability to deliver on his mandate and pledged the committee’s support for the ministry. He also assured that the committee would carry out its oversight functions diligently.
“It’s unfortunate that the creation of this ministry is coming late, but it’s better late than never. With your wealth of experience as a technocrat and practicing farmer, we are confident that this sector will witness significant development,” Raji stated.
The transformation of Nigeria’s livestock sector is expected to unlock economic opportunities and contribute significantly to national development.
