The Federal Republic of Nigeria has congratulated Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah on her historic election as Namibia’s first female president, marking a significant milestone in African leadership and gender equality.
Nandi-Ndaitwah, currently serving as Namibia’s Vice President, emerged victorious in the presidential election as announced by the Electoral Commission of Namibia. Her win extends the leadership of the ruling SWAPO party, which has been at the helm of Namibia’s governance since its independence in 1990.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday, the Acting Spokesperson for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, praised the election outcome as a testament to the Namibian people’s commitment to stability and progress.
“The people of Namibia have indeed voted for stability,” the statement noted. “The Government of Nigeria looks forward to further strengthening our historic, strong, and vibrant relationship during her tenure in office for the benefit of our people.”
Nandi-Ndaitwah’s victory has been widely celebrated as a landmark achievement, underscoring Africa’s strides toward greater inclusion of women in leadership roles. Her presidency is expected to inspire similar progress across the continent.
Nigeria and Namibia share a long-standing relationship rooted in their joint efforts during the anti-apartheid struggle. Officials in Abuja have expressed optimism that Nandi-Ndaitwah’s leadership will provide new opportunities to deepen bilateral ties and foster collaboration in areas such as trade, education, and regional security.
The Government of Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Namibia under her leadership, underscoring the importance of African unity and the empowerment of women in governance.
