The Nigerian Senate has passed for second reading a bill seeking to establish the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Satellite Town Development Commission.
The bill, sponsored by Senator Aliyu Wadada (Nasarawa West), is officially titled The Federal Capital Territory Satellite Town Development Commission and Other Related Matters Bill, 2024 (SB. 533).
In his lead debate, Senator Wadada emphasized the significance of the proposed commission in addressing infrastructure deficits and promoting sustainable development in Abuja’s satellite towns. He noted that the initiative aims to address years of neglect in these areas, fostering equitable growth and improving the quality of life for residents.
Supporting the bill, Senator Adams Oshiomhole (Edo North) and Senator Osita Ngwu (Enugu West) highlighted the pressing need for the bill to advance, given the potential for enhancing development in the FCT.
Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin also lent his voice in support, stating that the bill underscores the government’s commitment to improving living standards and access to essential services in satellite towns. He described the initiative as a milestone in urban planning for the nation’s capital.
Following a unanimous agreement, the Senate referred the bill to the Committee on FCT, tasking it with further deliberations and a report within two weeks.
