Benin city – Palpable shock gripped residents of Emuhi in the whee hours of 20 December 2007 when two rival quarters in a community, Emuhi and Igor both in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State clashed, leading to bloody casualties that claimed the life of the oldest man in the Emuhi Clan, one Pa. Omoruyi Osagiede.

The deceased daughter was a wife of a late Military Officer who died in 1997 while on a peace keeping mission in Sierra Leone, Mrs Elizabeth was matcheted to death in the presence of her son, Mohamed Bashiru who also sustained some matchet injuries before he narrowly escaped from the scene to an unknown destination for cover and safety.

The crisis, it was gathered to be as a result of supremacy battle between both quarters over which name should appear on the new Edo State Master Plan Survey being carried out by the State Government.

Recalled that the community comprised of seven quarters with Igor claiming to be more influential and populated, hence they demand for its name to be used on the State Master Plan.

Our crime reporter scooped that trouble started when Emuhi disagreed, saying that Igor residents only came to settle in the Community.

Multiple sources disclosed that the Community meetings have always been held in Pa. Omoruyi’s house being the oldest man in the area before the crisis.

According to the sources, people of Igor quarter invaded Pa Omoruyi Osagiede’s house on the fateful day and set it ablaze with him (Omoruyi) inside the building.

It was further gathered that Mohamed Bashiru and his mother who have been taking shelter in the house since their father’s death attempted to escaped through the back yard but were caught and matcheted, while Mohamed managed to escape after being bruised, but his mother gave up the ghost in the process in her pool of blood.

Further information reaching our correspondent indicated that Mohamed reported the matter at the Police Station and all efforts to get justice failed, hence his decision to run for cover and has not been heard of.

Effort to get comment from the Edo State Police public Relations officer, DSP Osifo Abiodun, proved abortive as calls and text messages sent to his phone were not answered nor replied to as at the time of filing this report
