BENIN CITY – It was wailing and anguish on Monday, December 10, 2018, at about 9:00pm as suspected Boko Haram gunmen attacked and killed a couple, Mr. and Mrs. Uwagie at Uwague Street, off Upper Sokponna Road in Benin City.
It was gathered that neighbors heard sporadic gunshots by masked gunmen in the area, making them scamper and ran for safety. When the commotion had died down about 30 minutes later, they (neighbours) started coming out of their houses and hideout, only to discover that the couple, had been murdered in cool blood.
It was also gathered that Mr. and Mrs. Uwagie were members of the Jehovah Witnesses and they were always going to the northern parts of the Nigeria, where they engaged in evangelism.
Narrating the incident, the younger sister to the deceased woman, Mrs. Asato, said that in February, 2016, when they went to Maiduguri, Borno State to preach, the couple were attached by the sect members and they fled back to Benin City, and on arriving Benin City they were also receiving death threats messages from the sect members. They fled their home in Benin to a different part of the country, but were never comfortable, so they returned home to Benin City, Edo State, thinking that the threats and messages were over.
Mrs. Asato went further to say that they never knew that they were still been monitored by the Boko Haram Sect members. Noting that the sect members made good their threats, when the came to their Benin City resident and killed the couple in December 10, 2018 and nothing was stolen or removed from the couple’s apartment.
Neighbors described the couple who had no children as loving peaceful and easy going.
As at the time of writing this report, the corpses of Mr. and Mrs. Uwagie have been deposited at the mortuary.
When our reporter visited the Police Public Relations Officer of the Edo State Police Command, DSP Moses Nwombe for comment, he was not on sit, as he was said to be out of town on official assignment.
