THE Rivers Chairman of Trade Union Congress (TUC), Mr. Chika Onuegbu, has urged the Federal Government to seek alternative to subsidy to address economic challenges being faced by the country.
Onuegbu said this in an interview with newsmen in Port Harcourt.
He said that subsidy claims were given to “selfish’’ individuals to the disadvantage of the ordinary Nigerians.
“Much of the fuel subsidy payments are framed up to favour marketers mainly, who are now blackmailing the Federal Government with their claims.
“We must also as a country, decide whether we must continue with fuel subsidy or find better alternatives,’’ Onuegbu said.
The TUC chairman, who stressed the need to ensure probity and accountability, called on the incoming government to investigate the subsidy management.
He said that it was imperative to penalise persons or institutions found culpable in the subsidy programme.
He said the President-elect retired Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, should investigate the subsidy scheme, recover every kobo paid in error or fraudulently and punish any person who stole from subsidy.
