WARRI – Delta state governor , Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, said any commissioner that refuses to relate with the press is doing disservice to his administration.

The governor said this yesterday during the Quarterly Media Interaction at the Government house in Asaba.

Reacting to an issue raised by a journalist who indicted the Delta State commissioner for Transport , Mr. Vincent Uduaghan ,who rebuffed him when he tried to get information from his office about the state of Marcoplo buses which were lying waste in the premises of the Transport ministry, the Chief Executive frown at such attitudes. He said,

“Any commissioner who refuses to relate with the press about the activities going on in his/her ministry is as a matter of fact, doing a disservice to this administration.”

“If there is any information you cannot readily give out or not clear about, be honourable enough to say , you want to check your books, and I believe the person would understand. ” Okowa said.

However, the governor explained that some of the buses were being penciled for sales, stating that sale of any government property often involves a lot of paper work, hence the delay in the sales.

The governor while fielding questions from journalists, reeled out the achievements so far made by his administration , adding that there is more to be done especially in the area of roads rehabilitation with the onset of the dry season.

Dr. Okowa called on the media to also help sensitize Deltans on the need to keep the state clean. He hinted that the government would soon come hard on the people who still engage in indiscriminate dumping of refuse.

“By the time someone packs refuse, from his house and decides the best place to drop it is on the median, then something is definitely wrong.”

“Next year, we are going to set up a Task Force , with a heavy fine or jail term for for those who dump refuse indiscriminately. We have reduced the price of the refuse bin from #20,000 to #6,000 so that everyone can afford it.” He said.
