BENIN CITY – The Director, World Safety Organization (WSO), National Office for Nigeria, Mr. Soji Olalokun has drawn attention to the fact that “an estimated 541 million young workers (15-24 years old) which includes 37 million children in hazardous child labour account for more than 15 percent of the world labour force and suffer up to a 40 percent higher rate of non-fact occupational injuries than adult workers older than 25 years.
Olalokun, the WSO Director who made this known on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the commemoration of the world day for safety and health at work and the 4th celebration by the Nigerian Office which ran with the theme, “Generation Safe and healthy, on April 27, 2018 observed that to keep the workplace safe and healthy, some practices had to be adhered to; there was need to adhere and tackle the different factors responsible for these unsafe acts by all stakeholders.

Mr. Olalokun on behalf of his organization at this auspicious event bestowed on, “Award of Honour” on the Commissioner for Youths and Special Duties, Hon. Mika Amanokha for his continued support in promoting and making safety a way of life in Edo State at the Oba Akenzua II Auditorium, UBTH.
Amanokha while commending the organization and its breed of guest lecturers for their sensitization and awareness level of unsafe acts and health hazards in the workplace said the theme for this year’s celebration, “Generation safe and healthy,” was apt.

The Hon. Commissioner stated that as part of keeping up with safety measures, the Edo State Government was poised in its resolve to increase Fire fighter trucks to at least 4 to minimize the incidents of fire outbreaks in the city.
Giving a breakdown of how the fire-fighting trucks would function, Amanokha stated that in addition to the two fire fighting trucks already positioned at the Kingsquare (Right Road) in Benin, one would be positioned at Aduwawa to cater for its immediate environs up to Agbor road; one would be place down Sapele road axis, while one would function at Ekehuan road before the year run’s out.

He also mentioned government’s vision of extending fire fighting services to Edo Central and Edo North this year, with the plan to have at least, one fire fighting truck in every local government area in addition with the training and retraining of firemen to boost efficiency, with the implementation of the fire service law in Edo State.
