ABUJA – Speaker, House of Representatives Rt., Hon. Femi Gbajabimilla on Wednesday inuagurated the Chairmen and Deputy Chairmen of the 104 Standing Committees and 5 Special Committees of the House with a charge on them to stamp out corruption in the Ministries Departments and Agencies MDAs through effective oversight.

Gbajabimilla who said that the Committee system is as old as the legislature itself said that the House would be empowering these committees to effectively discharge their duties.

He noted that Nigeria as a country is enmeshed in fraud and charged the lawmakers to stem the tide for the progress of the country.

According to him, the committee system is as old as the legislature and through it legislative duties are carried out effectively

He pointed out that members of the Committee especially the Chairmen and their deputies were seasoned legislators who were selected to head these committees based on experience.

The Speaker also divested the ad-hoc committees of the House of their duties and charged the chairmen of such committees to send in their reports on or before November 14, 2019.

Meanwhile, a former Director-General DG National Institute of Legislative studies NILS Prof. Ladi Hamalai has harped on the need for more funding of the legislative committees for effective performance.

Hamalai who delivered a speech at the event noted that most legislative committees are not properly funded and they most times depend on the MDAs they oversight for funds to operate.
