BENIN CITY – Traders in Edo State have hailed the Supreme Court verdict dismissing the alleged certificate forgery suit against Governor Godwin Obaseki and affirming the governor’s victory at the September 19 governorship poll, adding that Edo people’s confidence in the governor was never misplaced.

The traders said the governor will continue to enjoy the popular support of Edo people as his administration continues to re-engineer governance to impact on the lives of the people through infrastructure and socio-economic development in all sectors.

A trader in Oba Market, Mrs. Esther Osahon Obasuyi, said the Supreme Court verdict reaffirmed the confidence that Edo people had on Governor Obaseki’s qualification for the September 19, 2020 election, adding, “Despite the false stories peddled by the opposition, All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, we strongly believed that the governor was more than qualified for the office.”

“Edo people never took the wrong decision by re-electing the Governor. Now that the Supreme Court verdict has put the question on the governor’s qualification to rest, the Edo State Chapter of APC should join hands with Governor Obaseki in continuing with his good works, which include regular payment of workers’ salaries, pension, and the ongoing reforms of public education and healthcare,” she added.

Another trader, Mrs. Vivian Obi, while commending the verdict of the Supreme Court, said, “I never had any doubt about Governor Obaseki’s qualification for the number one seat in the state. From his style of governance during his first tenure, we saw how the governor restored sanity in different sectors, especially with the approach in collection of taxes in markets and how he transformed other sectors of the state.

“Obaseki has never disappointed the Edo people. I am happy with the verdict of the Supreme Court. The Edo APC should join hands with the governor to make the state great for us all.”

She added that traders will continue to support the governor to create more job opportunities for youths and consolidate on his achievements in the last four years.

The Supreme Court’s five-man panel of justices on May 28, 2021 upheld the ruling of the Appeal Court, which dismissed the alleged certificate forgery suit filed by the APC against the Governor, during the 2020 governorship election.
