BENIN CITY – The National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) yesterday, kicked against the high rate of rejection of corps member by employers as well as aiding and stage managing their rejection of Primary Place Assignments (PPAs).

The Director General of NYSC, Brig. General Shaibu Ibrahim, expressed his resentment in Benin City, during corps employers workshop organised by the scheme.

“The theme of the workshop is ‘optimizing the NYSC/Corps employers partnership for national development in the context of the new normal was chosen to emphasize the collective roles towards sustaining the impact of the scheme”.

Represented by the director of legal in the scheme, Bar. Ahmed Tijani said the workshop was to eliciting idea and suggestions aimed at ensuring good partnership and relationship between NYSC, employers and corp members.

He said NYSC is also worried by employers not applying for corps members, under utilisation, delay in issuance of monthly clearance, aiding corps abscondment, lack of provision of statutory welfare of corps members among others.

He said employers are expected to make some statutory welfare provision for the corps members serving with them during their service year.

He warned that employers have no authority to approve leave or movement of corps members outside their state of deployment.

According to him, due to the non availability of white collar job, NYSC has established entrepreneurial scheme so that corps member can acquire skills and be self employed.

The Edo State Coordinator of the scheme, Mrs. Abiodun Olubukola, while also speaking, urged the corps employers to always furnish the scheme whenever a sick leave is given to any corps members for proper documentation and record keeping just as she sued for adequate care for them.

One of the participants, Kenwe Modupe, urged employers not to see themselves as boss but as leaders who should be able to guide corps member to make their service year worth while.
