BENIN CITY – A middle age man, Omotesi Saturday residing in Ugbighoko quarters, Benin city, Edo state has reportedly escaped from home to an unknown location, following recent threats to his life by one of the most dreaded Ogboni confraternity in the country.
Of worst, was the alleged suspected assassins who were reported to have earlier killed his father, Saturday Iraze and sacked other members of his family before declaring him (Omotesi) wanted.
An eyewitness account narrated that Omotesi’s father was a renowned member of the the cultic society, adding that it was the culture of the secret society, that after the death of its member, the deceased’s eldest son is expected to undergo certain initiation rites in view of taking over his father’s position in the secret cult.
According to the source, Omotesi, after the assassination of his father was expected to drink from the water used to bath the corpse of his father and sleep beside the corpse of the deceased for seven days among other rites to be able to take his father’s position in the cultic society.
This development according to the source did not go down well with Omotesi who vehemently refused to be initiated citing his christian religious faith as reason.
Infuriated by Omotesi’s refusal, the group it was alleged vowed to explore all means possible to eliminate him from the surface earth.
Our crime correspondent gathered, that while Omotesi was battling for life from the hands of the Ogboni confraternity which kept tormenting him day and night, the alleged assassins believed to have killed his father, on their part threatened that they have spread their dragnets across the country with a view to apprehending Omotesi and possibly killed him in the process.
Another source in the area who spoke with journalists on condition of anonymity, described Omotesi’s situation as a dilemma, appealing to anyone who might have been harbouring him under refuge to have compassion for him, even as the source lamented that the country was no longer safe for him to live in.
