Lagos- Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has appealed to Nigerians to support retired Gen. Muhammadu Buhari’s presidential ambition by contributing for his campaign.
Buhari is contesting the February 14 presidential election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Fashola, the Director, Buhari/Osinbajo Campaign Fund-raising Committee, made the appeal in Lagos while unveiling a platform on which contributions could be made into the campaign fund.
He said that the financial support of Nigerians was needed to enable Buhari to fund his campaign.
The governor noted that electioneering campaign was capital intensive, adding that adequate campaign was needed to secure victory.
Fashola said that the decision of the committee to source funds from ordinary Nigerians was in line with Buhari‘s desire that the common people should drive his presidential aspiration.
He added that it was to prove that campaign fund-raising could be done in a transparent manner.
“One of the things that Gen. Buhari said when his campaign started was that he desired to have a campaign that involved the ordinary people, and that he was committed to a transparent campaign fund-raising.
“We have taken that as a compass in the committee in developing our fund-raising strategies.
“One of the things we seek to achieve is to give this nation back to the ordinary people.
“For a long time, there have been lots of issues about how campaigns are funded.
“There are accusations and counter-accusations on whether government is involved or it is super spenders who fund these campaigns.
“Now, we believe if ordinary people fund the campaigns of their candidates, they will have a voice in the process of change that we all desire,’’ he said.
Fashola said that Nigerians could support Buhari by contributing at least N100 to any of the platforms devised by the committee.
He explained that donations could be made through the banks by using a dedicated account number APCGMBPYO, or send electronically through www.apcgmbpyo.org.
