ABUJA – The Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh, said the military had provided enough welfare package for the families of fallen heroes.
Badeh made this known in an interview with newsmen on the sidelines of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration in Abuja.
He said: “The armed forces generally have so much welfare package for the loved ones left behind by the fallen heroes.
“The Federal Government introduced group life insurance for them that are different from the ones the services do.
“We try to take care of everyone left behind though we can’t say that we’ll solve everybody’s problems but we’ll do what we can within the law.’’
The defence chief said that the Armed Forces Remembrance Day was an occasion to remember the fallen heroes, adding that this is a tradition globally.
“The day is an avenue to remember those who have laid down their lives for the defence and unity of Nigeria.
“The lesson for the military is that it is just like the oath we took to lay down our lives for the defence of Nigeria.
“When you pay that supreme sacrifice, you will know that you will not be forgotten; one day every year you will be remembered for that,’’ he said.
Also speaking, the Director of Veteran Affairs, Defence Headquarters, Brig-Gen. Ade Fadunsi, said that he was happy with the turnout of people who attended the ceremony.
Fadunsi said that the turnout at the event translated to the fact that Nigerians appreciate the sacrifices by the military to bring peace to the country.
