Yenagoa – Some residents of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa capital, have commended the Nigeria Police for ensuring security during the recent festivities.
The three major festivals that were just concluded were the Christmas, New Year Festival and the Eid-el-Maulud.
The residents told newsmen in Yenagoa that the security operations carried out during the just concluded three festivals were impressive compared with previous years.
Mrs. Ann Ayibatonye, a resident of Obele Ovom community in Yenagoa Local Government Area, commended the security agencies over its operations during the period and called for sustenance.
Ayibatonye said that if such security measures could be maintained, the state would attract more investors while the state’s economy would improve.
“My street has been known as the most dangerous and one that was prone to crime within the capital city, but throughout the celebration period, the street was safe.
“I commend the security agencies, especially the police who took it upon themselves in ensuring that the people were protected during and after the period,’’ she said.
A resident of Amarata in Yenagoa Local Government Area, , Mr Kenneth Perezi, also said his area was calm within the period and urged the police to sustain the momentum.
Perezi, who described security as “ pertinent,’’ advised the state government to step up plans in ensuring that the state was safe for residents.
“ We had security during the festive period; we did not witness any criminal incident as the security apparatus put in place in Yenagoa during the just concluded three festivals was a welcome development,’’ he said.
Also speaking to newsmen Mr. Asinim Butswat, the spokesman of the Bayelsa Police Command, said that the command was ready to check crime and ensure the safety of the people.
“It is our duty to protect lives and property and we will continue to work hard in ensuring that the state remains safe.
“The festive period was safe because our men were on patrol; thank God we are moving forward in ensuring security,’’ Butswat said.
