A final-year law student of the University of Benin, UNIBEN, has committed suicide in Benin City.
Daniel Iyoha, 27 allegedly hanged himself in a room in his family residence at 17, Obamwonyi Street, Off Universal Road, Benin City, last Saturday.
The unfortunate incident has thrown residents of the area into mourning as they find it difficult to come to terms with the sacrilegious and abominable tragedy.
The Public Relations Officer for Edo Police Command DSP Stephen Onwochei stated that “we got the report that one Daniel Iyoha hanged himself with a wrapper on a ceiling fan in his room at house number 17, Abamwonyi Street, Off Universal Road…..,
“When our team of investigators were drafted there, after reviewing the crime scene the corpse was brought down and moved to a hospital”.
DSP Onwochei stated further that the police have commenced investigation with a view to knowing the motive behind the action.
When WEEKEND OBSERVER visited his family residence, sympathises thronged the house.
It was gathered that the bereaved Iyoha family lost their father over two decades ago as the training and welfare of the deceased and seven other children rested on the woman.
They described the deceased as easy-going and devoted catholic who hardly missed morning mass.
A family source hinted that the victim strange behaviour lately forced his mother to find out from him whether he was facing any challenge in life.
The deceased was said to have also asked his mother how should would feel if any of her children is no more.
It was scooped that on that fateful day, the deceased, after returning from morning mass, washed clothes, tidies his room, as he remained at home till dusk when he took his own life.
In a suicide not alleged to have been dropped by the deceased he requested for two reverend fathers in his church to pray for him as he is being buried just as he stated name of his friend that would witness his burial.
His stay at home that day was unusual as it was gathered that Daniel also had auto mobile spear parts shop at Uwelu, Benin City, this, along with his academic work defined him as a busy person.
Daniel Iyoha was said to have committed the act within a short period his mother left the compound to see a neighbour.
He was said to have picked a chair, locked his room door, tied a wrapper to a ceiling fan as he committed the abomination.
Sources disclosed that his sister who was reading in another room did not notice the act until their mother returned to the apartment.
Apparently anxious to ascertain the whereabouts of Daniel, the woman was said to have forcefully opened his door as she screamed at the sight of the lifeless body of her son dangling from the ceiling.
WEEKEND OBSERVER second visit did not yield further details as the family declined comment. However, it was scooped that the bereaved family has been made to undergo some traditional rituals incurable by the action of the deceased.
