AN Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos has granted a N300, 000 bail to 26-year-old Ikechukwu Umeh over alleged theft of N1.5 million.
The magistrate, Mr E.O. Ogunkanmi, who gave the ruling, also granted the accused two sureties in like sum.
The accused, who resides at No. 15, Awonaike St., Tejuosho in Surulere, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of fraud and stealing.
He,however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecutor, Insp. Feddy Asu, had told the court that the offences were committed on January 4 at No. 21, Omoniyi St., Shangisha in Ketu, a Lagos suburb.
He said the accused contracted the complainant, one Khadijat Rasheed to supply him a trailer load of sand, but Umeh handed her a cheque which was dishonoured at the bank for insufficient funds.
“All efforts to reach the accused were unsuccessful after the transaction.’’
Asu noted that the offences contravened Sections 285 and 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The case was adjourned to July 2 for mention.
