BENIN CITY – The Nigerian police have been called upon to intensify efforts in the training of their officers and men in the effective handling of weapons like their counterparts in the army, air force and the navy.
Hon. Barr. Damian Lawani, member representing Etsako Central Constituency in the Edo State House of Assembly stated this weekend, during a condolence visit to the family of late Sandra Imakhu, who was shot dead by a police man at a burial in Fugar recently.
He said some policemen are fond of claiming accidental discharge as an excuse whenever any of them, who is trigger happy kills an innocent citizen and wondered why its  reoccurrence among the policemen.
According to him, “it is high time a law is being put in place against any police man who fires gun at any function like burial and weddings as some of them are very fond of shooting into the air at public places just to please their ‘boss’ forgotten that the stray bullet can meet, and kill or injure an innocent person.
The Etsako Central Representative prayed God for the repose of the soul of the dead and asked that God should grant the family the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss.  Hon Lawani, however promised to ensure that justice is giving to the family of the deceased.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Chief Barr. Mike Imakhu, thanked Hon Lawani for the condolence visit and identifying with the family at this their time of grief. He said the death of their sister came to everyone in the family as a rude shock and disbelief, adding that late Sandra had just put to bed almost two months before her death.
Barr. Imakhu who is also the legal adviser to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Local Government appealed to Hon Lawani to use his good offices to ensure that justice is done as their late sister has been killed leaving two months baby and three others motherless.
