South Sudan, ranked 198th in the latest world rankings, recorded their first ever win in a competitive match with a 1-0 beating of Equatorial Guinea in a 2017 African Cup of Nations qualifier.
The famous victory happened at the Juba Stadium in the South Sudan capital.
‘Bright Star’ played their first match in 2012 after South Sudan gained independence from Sudan the year before and had failed to win in their first 12 competitive matches (losing 10 and playing to two stalemates).
Their winless run was finally brought to an end on Saturday with victory over a team ranked over 100 places above them in the world.
After a well contested opening 45, the hosts took the lead on 52 minutes – Atak Lual striking the ball past Orlando Pirates stopper Felipe Ovono.
The goal set the 2015 AFCON hosts in motion, but South Sudan held on to secure their first ever win, sparking mass celebrations inside the stadium.
The defeat leaves Nzalang Nacional bottom of Group C while South Sudan are level on points with Mali who face Benin on Sunday.
