IRUEKPEN – Nigerians are too quick to read motives into the actions of government, to the extent that sooner or later the whole issue is be clouded and become submerged, former Edo State governor, Professor Oserheimen Osunbor has submitted.
He made the submission yesterday in an interview with The NIGERIAN OBSERVER, while responding to questions bordering on allegations and charges of corruption on some political leaders.  “Part of our problems in this   country is that people are quick to read motives, ill motives into the actions of government, so that sooner or later the whole issues become beclouded, you don’t really know the truth, the issues become submerged by a web of theories and allegations.  That is not good.
“Some of the high profile assassination cases in Nigeria, or crimes when people go to court, you find that there, are so many theories, and unfortunately, the media published these different theories and allegations and rumours and at the end of the day, even before the court get to hear the witnesses or the evidence people have already taken positions on the pages of newspapers and the public is left wondering who is actually right”, he observed.
According to Professor Osunbor such attitude is prejudicial to the course of justice, adding that in some other countries they are seen to hinder the administration of justice.
He noted that when a government organ takes certain actions in line with its constitutional powers, it is not for the individual to say whether it is right or wrong, especially when the person affected has already gone to court, saying it is for the court to interpret the laws and decide what is right and what is wrong.
“It is the duty of the court to interpret the laws to say what is legal and what is illegal you can express opinions, but ultimately you can  preserve those opinions until the court has pronounced its judgements”, he stated.
On immunity clause, he affirmed that there was need so preserve immunity clause in the constitution, pointing out that it is not to the interest of governance when for instance, a sitting governor is brought to answer charges in court.
On security, he pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari for the return of military road blocks, saying that it should be subject to correction, and modification as it serves more good than harm.
