Birnin Kebbi – Gov. Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi, has appealed to the federal government to provide the police with helicopters to tackle the growing menace of cattle rustling in the state.
The governor made the appeal on Thursday in Birnin-Kebbi when he received the Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr Solomon Arase in his office.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Arase was on a working visit to the state.
NAN reports that the deputy governor, Alhaji Sama’Ila Yombe, who was also at the event, pictorially demonstrated the routes and mode of operations of the cattle rustlers to the I-G.
He said that the activities of the rustlers had created tension in the state.
Yombe said that occasional air patrol by the police had helped in identifying the mode of operation and the routes used by the cattle rustlers.
He added the air patrols had also helped in destabilising the activities of the rustlers, adding that its sustenance would help to keep the crime at bay.
Yombe commended the police for sustaining low crime rate in the state and assured the I-G that the government would continue to support the police.
Earlier, Arase told the governor that he was in the state to personally explore avenues to improve the performance of the police.
He urged the government to provide land for the construction of housing estate for police officers.
He solicited the assistance of the government to upgrade the Police Staff school in the state to secondary level.
Arase assured the governor that the low crime rate in the state would be sustained.
