Lagos – A firm, FT Logistics and Global Services Ltd. on Wednesday said it would commence an electronic multi truck call-up system in first quarter of 2016 to address the gridlock on port access roads.
The Chairman of the company, Chief Chris Orode made the disclosure in an interview with newsmen in Lagos.
Orode said the system would attract more organisations into new businesses at the ports “when it become operational’’.
“Yes, we are almost done with a multi-truck call up system designed to solve the problem of traffic congestion along the Lagos ports access roads.
“By the first quarter of the year, it would become operational.
“Presently, the system has its base at the Trade Fair Complex and it will work by having all the trucks doing business at the ports registered on our system,’’ Orode told newsmen.
He said that the registration would structure and organise their (trucks) schedule and movements into the ports.
“The situation we have presently is that all the trucks move into the roads at the same time, hence the lingering congestion.
“So by the time the project starts, all trucks would get messages from our system and that will tell them when they were allowed into the ports for business.“ Orode said.
He said the company would operate the system with the stakeholders at the ports and traffic officials.
Orode said the firm would mount scanners along the roads leading to the ports to ensure that trucks complied with their schedules.
“The scanners will detect trucks that are not supposed to be on the road by showing the red light.
“So we would quickly alert traffic officials about such trucks on their way to the ports, who will immediately stop their movement, “ he told newsmen.
Orode said that the system would have massive impact on axis like Ijora, Mile12, CMS and bring sanity to the roads.
On funding of the project, Orode said the initiative was strictly private sector driven.
He, however, said that the company was seeking support from the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and the Lagos State Government on how to make the project an impactful one.
