BENIN CITY- Over 100 persons have been prosecuted and subsequently convicted for various offences, ranging from non- possession of vehicle particulars, fake Drivers Licence, hackney permit, proof of ownership among others.

Meanwhile, there was relatively low turn out of vehicles on the roads in Benin City during the compliance road check exercise which commenced on Tuesday.

Speaking on the exercise which was facilitated by the Edo State Internal Revenue Service (EIRS), in collaboration with the Police, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps the Executive Director, Tax Compliance in the EIRS, Prince Felix Isuku, said the exercise was not aimed at witch hunting any individual, rather to encourage compliance with the necessary rules.

“Many vehicles have no genuine drivers licence, hence we decided to embark on compliance exercise”, Prince Isuku said.

He stated that it costs the state government huge funds to maintain roads in the interest of road users, saying a lot of enlightenment campaign have been carried out on the need for motorists to renew their vehicle particulars and obtain genuine drivers licence.

The EIRS Executive Director who personally monitored the exercise viewed the process as a ‘good one’ adding that the exercise is currently taking place simultaneously across the state.

He used the occasion to advise motorists to visit any of the motor licencing centre across the state to renew and apply for genuine vehicle particulars.

At king square, Sapele Road, Ramat Park, Olua Primary School; Oluku Primary School, Youth Centres Akpakpava Road, where the Mobile Court were situated, some of the victims were seen complying in terms of payment of fines.

One of the convicted victims, Collins Oziegbe described the exercise as a welcome development, adding that it would spur road users to always comply with the rules and regulation guiding road usage.
