BENIN CITY – The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Victor Edoror has sworn-in the member-elect representing Etsako-West II. Mr. Sylvanus Eruaga.
The administration of oath of allegiance and as a new member on the member-elect followed the Court of Appeal Benin ruling delivered in favour of the Lawmaker on December 12, 2015.
The setback suffered as a result of the continued delay in swearing in of the member-elect owing to the verification of the certificate of return presented by Mr. Sylvanus Eruaga, had resulted to litigation between the member-elect and the leadership of the House.
The Court of Appeal sitting in Benin had also on April 4, 2016 summoned the Speaker and the Clerk of the House to appear before it on April 7 to explain why they refused to swear-in the member-elect and why they should not be committed to prison for disobeying court order.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Victor Edoror, after swearing-in the member representing Etsako West II explained that the assembly was mandated to obey the laws of the land.
“All we need to do is to put all the rudiments on the table before we obey” Edoror said.
Speaking after the swearing in as member representing Etsako West II, Mr. Eruaga described his swearing in as a victory for democracy and freedom for the people of Etsako West II.
