ABUJA – The House of Representatives on Thursday urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts to rescue the pupils of secondary school Chibok abducted by insurgents two years ago.

This followed the adoption of a motion under matters of urgent public importance sponsored by Rep. Asabe Vilita (Borno-APC).

Leading the debate, Vilita expressed worry that two years since over 200 girls were abducted, efforts by security agencies to rescue them from their abductors had yet to yield positive results.

The lawmaker who currently represents Damboa, Gwoza, Chibok federal constituency said the need to redouble search efforts became necessary in view of the need to reunite the girls with their parents.

Villita, who expressed concern about the safety of the girls, said their condition will worsen if they were not rescued on time.

“Two years is too much a period for them to remain in custody considering that they risk being subjected to untold hardship, slavery, molestation, abuse, rape, pregnancy and forceful marriage in the hands their abductors,” she added.

Contributing, Rep. Aishatu Dukku (Gombe State) called for a collective efforts to facilitate the rescue of the Chibok girls.

She said there was need to sustain the campaign for the rescue of the girls whom she said were denied of their rights to freedom and education.

“Our voices must be heard as we will continue to fight for their freedom collectively.

“Living in the hands of these abductors means living in a deplorable condition and I want to let them know that we have not forgotten them,” Dukku said.

Similarly, Rep. Onyemaechi Mrakpor (Delta State) expressed worry that female students were being molested, kidnapped and assaulted in many parts of the country.

“This is affecting the girl child education and some of the girls may think it is no more safe to go to school.

“The situation is worthy of what every well meaning Nigerian should take a second look at.

“security agencies must take a step stronger and more effective than what is in place to ensure the return of the Chibok girls,” Mrakpor added.

Rep. Abdulrazak Namdas described the situation of the missing girls as unfortunate.

Namdas however, urged the federal government not to relent in efforts to rescue the girls.

He also urged Nigerians to be patience and continue to pray for te return of the girls.

Namdas further urged the parents of the missing school girls not to loose hope over the return of the girls.

Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara said the House was committed to ensuring that the girls were reunited with their families.

“We must insist as an institution that targets are set so that we don’t lose the sense of urgency in our efforts to ensure that the girls are rescued and brought back to the warm and loving embrace of their families.

“And also the parents, I’ll like to call on you not to lose hope but continue to believe that‎ though their days of mourning and despair may be long, the morning will come and joy comes in the morning and the morning may come sooner than expected,” Dogara said.

The House, therefore resolved to send a delegation to meet with parent of the missing Chibok girls.
