The Edo State Government has suspended with immediate effect , the Road Check Exercise on vehicle particulars and other traffic offences, tagged ‘Operation Velvet’ it embarked on Monday.

Acting Executive Chairman, Edo State Internal Revenue Service (EIRS) Emmanuel  Usoh Esq. made this known at the Corporate Head quarters of the revenue service in Benin City.

Mr. Usoh explained that after a review of the exercise by all stake holders which include the Nigerian Police, Federal Road Safety Corp,  Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corp, the Internal Revenue Service Vehicle Inspection Officers, the decision was to give ample opportunity to vehicle owners to renew and obtain their vehicle particulars.

“We deemed it fit to suspend the operations for now until further notice to create room for Edo people to renew their vehicle particulars and drivers licence as the authorization to drive on our roads. A lot of people complained that they did not get the opportunity to do that and others claimed they did not get the news as they claimed.”

The Acting Executive Chairman expressed satisfaction with the success the exercise recorded until its suspension, but decried the attitude of most vehicle owners towards getting and reviewing their vehicle particulars.

Mr. Usoh pointed out that with the awareness already created, ignorance would no longer be an excuse as the next operation would come as a surprise.

“Ordinarily, we have three in a year, the first have been done in the first quarter, the second is this one we are suspending. We intend to complete this one and then carry out a third one.”

The EIRS Acting chief however advised all motorists to ensure the safety of lives and properties on our roads by using unexpired tires.
