Owerri – The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has called on the Federal Government to give adequate attention to the legitimate developmental needs of oil producing areas in the country, while urging youths of the region to desist from further destruction of national assets.

In a communique signed by the National Secretary of the Union, Shuaibu Leman at the union’s just concluded National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Owerri, Imo State and made available to the NIGERIAN OBSERVER, stated that the Federal Government should enlist the support of community leaders across the nation in finding lasting solutions to the problem of insurgency particularly in the North East and the South East.

It also called for the state of emergency be declared on Nigerian roads by the Federal Government to forestall further decay, loss of lives and property on our highways.

The Union who thanked the Executive Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha for facilitating the hosting of the NEC meeting in Owerri, further stated that the Federal Government should specifically address the state of insecurity, especially the rising cases of kidnapping that is fast spreading to all parts of the country.

The release also frown at crimes committed against Journalists across the nation, therefore calling for the reformation of the judiciary in a view to end impunity.

The communique further said “That more robust response is needed from all stakeholders, including NGOs, Development partners and other donor agencies in rebuilding and re-integrating victims of insurgency especially in the North East, in order to discourage those who have moved to their communities from returning to the IDP camps.

“The Federal Government should also expedite the process of reviewing upward the present minimum wage which is no longer in tandem with prevailing economic realities in the country”.

The NEC also appreciated the Imo State Council and Zone C of the Union for a good organization of the NEC meeting, further endorsed the report of the caretaker committee of Osun State Council and approved that elections be held in January as planned.
