Benin – A group, under the aegis of the Igarra Development Association (IDA), said on Monday that it had commenced the process to make Igarra, headquarters of the Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo, the commercial nerve-centre of Edo-North.

This was contained in a statement signed by the IDA president, Mr Mike Ukana, which was made available to newsmen in Benin.

The statement noted that the plan of the group was part of activities to complement the development efforts of the state government, as well as moves to diversify the national economy.

To this end, the group said it would host a business conference on Dec. 26, to explore business opportunities in Igarra.

The group would also use the opportunity of the roundtable to inaugurate the IDA, ‎ which is a community-based development association.

The statement said the IDA was formed in May 2016 by like-minded individuals desirous of enhancing the infrastructure and physical development of Igarra.

“We have decided to come together as a people to work for the development of Igarra.

“A people united, as you know, can achieve whatever they set their minds to and that is already working for us. We are, therefore, forging forward with a sense of focus,” he added.

The Akoko-Edo Local Government Council is the oldest local government council in Edo.

The people of the area were excised from the Akoko community in Ondo State in the sixties, during the creation of the defunct Mid-Western region in 1963.
